When planning a wash stall, priority should be given to the flooring, drainage, and workspace. These fundamental elements determine the ease of daily use and the amount of time required for future cleaning and maintenance.

Where should the wash stall be located?

The ideal location allows easy access for horses coming from the exercise arena or stables without blocking main passageways. 

Key considerations include:

  • Will horses waiting to be washed block the aisle?

  • Do handlers need to step away from the horse or step over hoses to access tools?

  • Is there a risk of wash water flowing into nearby dry areas?

What is the appropriate size for a wash stall?

Dimensions should be determined based on horse size, the number of handlers, and the space occupied by equipment. A standard reference size is at least 10 × 12 feet (approx. 3.05 × 3.66 meters); high-end or commercial stables might consider 12 × 14 feet (approx. 3.66 × 4.27 meters) or larger. More important than the gross footprint is the actual usable space remaining after equipment installation. Wall paneling, support posts, storage racks, and plumbing fixtures all take up space.

Before construction, it is recommended to mark the boundaries and equipment locations on the floor with tape and have the staff who will actually wash the horses simulate the workflow. When planning the wash stall, consider both the floor slope and the cleaning method. An appropriate slope facilitates drainage; a common design standard for wash areas involves a slope of approximately 1%–2% leading to the drain. Bedding materials and stable debris can easily clog drainage systems. 

When selecting a drainage solution, focus on the following:

  • Whether the drain location interferes with the horse's stance or staff operations.

  • Whether hair, mud, and debris can be captured before entering the piping.

  • Ease of cleaning without the need to move heavy equipment.

  • How wash-down wastewater is collected and treated, and whether it is separated from clean rainwater runoff.

My recommendation for final inspection: Conduct a water flow test based on actual usage volume after the equipment and floor mats are installed. Observe whether water pools in areas far from the drain, in corners, or at mat seams, and check if water flows out of the entrance.

Water Hoses and Storage: Arrange based on the actual workflow.

When washing a horse, be mindful of issues like long hoses getting stepped on or tangled. I recommend simulating a full wash-down procedure before finalizing equipment placement: picking up the spray nozzle, moving to both sides, accessing grooming products, and returning tools to their place. Check if the hose length is sufficient, if it drags on the ground, and if the retraction path crosses the area where the horse stands.

Hot water aids in winter cleaning and improves comfort, but heaters, piping, and drains must be protected against freezing and impact. Mixing valves can be used to limit water temperature and prevent scalding.

Prioritize Long-Term Costs When on a Limited Budget

When requesting quotes for a wash stall, break down the costs into categories: civil works, drainage, flooring, partitions, water supply, equipment installation, and ongoing maintenance. This helps identify whether a low-cost proposal has omitted essential items.

I recommend adding a frequently overlooked metric for comparison: the time required for cleanup after each use.

For example, if a design saves 5 minutes of cleanup time per use, and the stall is used 6 times a day for 300 days a year, the theoretical time savings would be:

5 × 6 × 300 ÷ 60 = 150 hours per year.

While this is a hypothetical calculation for comparison purposes, it illustrates a practical point: a design that is easy to clean and maintain may offer more value than simply minimizing the initial purchase price.

Pre-Commissioning Checklist

Before putting the facility into regular use, verify the following:

  • Operational space and exit routes remain unobstructed after equipment installation.

  • Water flows freely without significant pooling or overflowing into the aisle.

  • Floor mat edges are securely fastened, and seams and drains are easy to clean.

  • Storage facilities do not obstruct the movement of personnel.

  • Electrical installations have been verified by qualified personnel as suitable for the site's damp environment.

The true value of a wash-down area lies not merely in its appearance upon completion, but in the ease with which it can be kept clean, functional, and reliable during long-term use.
